Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) for Short Courses

For professionals from the 50 NFP countries to participate in a short course that is eligible for NFP funding at Leiden University.


For whom?

  • You must be a professional and a national of, and working and living in one of the following countries. Myanmar is included.
  • You are unconditionally admitted to the short course (see step 1 of application procedure below). 
  • You are nominated by your employer and have an employer’s statement that complies with the format EP-Nuffic has provided (see step 3 of the application procedure below). 
  • You have an official and valid passport.
  • If applicable, you must have a gov6ernment statement that meets the requirements of the country in which the employer is established (see step 4 of the application procedure below).
  • Applicants are not employed by an organisation that has its own means of staff development. Organisations that are considered to have their own means for staff development are for example: multinational corporations (e.g. Shell, Unilever, Microsoft), large national and/or a large commercial organisations, bilateral donor organisations (e.g. USAID, DFID, Danida, Sida, Dutch ministry of Foreign affairs, FinAid, AusAid, ADC, SwissAid), multilateral donor organisations, (e.g. a UN organisation, the World Bank, the IMF, Asian Development Bank, African Development Bank, IADB) and international NGOs (e.g. Oxfam, Plan, Care). 

NFP thematic priorities

The NFP budget, which is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is allocated as follows:
  • Category I countries are priority countries and receive more fellowships
  • 35% of the budget is earmarked for fellowships with a thematic focus on food security and private sector development
  • 50% of the budget is earmarked for applicants from Sub-Saharan Africa
  • 50% of the fellowships is earmarked for female applicants

What is covered by the NFP fellowship?


An NFP fellowship is intended to supplement the salary that the fellow should continue to receive during the study period. The allowance is a contribution towards the costs of living, tuition fee, visas, travel and insurance. If applicable, the fellowship holder is expected to cover the difference between the actual costs and the costs that are covered by the fellowship. Please be aware that you cannot receive more than one fellowship for the courses that take place at the same time.

Duration and application rounds

The NFP short course scholarship period is a minimum of 12 days and a maximum of 365 days. There are three application rounds each year:
  1. February/March 2017 is for short courses starting between 28 July 2017 and 23 November 2017. You can find more information about the available short courses for this deadline below.
  2. June/July 2017 
  3. September/October 2017

As NFP is currently being evaluated, the deadlines of June/July 2017 and September/October 2017 are subject to change. More information about these application rounds will be published in due course.
