The volunteer with help build the capacity of the organization by providing assistance to fundraising, women’s rights advocacy as well as reporting on Gender Based Violence Cases. Work directly with staff to come up with the organization strategic document highlighting key focus areas of intervention, including prospects of potential donors and partners. Analyze the capacity development needs for the advocacy strategy development and action planning. The objective is to increase opportunities and access to education and jobs for women. Together with staff, develop advocacy tools packages for international, national and local audiences and promote knowledge sharing within the organization to make sure that the organization and partners are familiar with the advocacy tools. Supporting the organization in building team capacity, reporting and finalizing annual/quarterly reports.

Brief Description

As the ESL Teacher to the relatively new Parliament of Myanmar, you will increase the capacity of the staff of both the upper and lower parliament of Myanmar, based in the capital of Nay Pyi Taw, to improve their English skills both through formal lessons and on the job support. This may include support in basic computer usage and Internet use. CUSO International volunteers will also work in coordination with a UNDP project that serves to strengthen the skills of members of parliament in English language, ICT and research, and to better understand their role and the needs of their constituents.

The volunteer will:
– Provide daily teaching of English as a second language to Parliament staff
– Provide research skills and translation skills and on the job support in these skill areas through daily contact in the designated department
– Continue to develop and adapt the ESL curriculum for parliamentarians and staff.
– Building a stronger CV for future ESL trainer’s activities and to make a bigger impact.

Essential Academic Qualifications

– Bachelor’s degree in any discipline or demonstrated competence in teaching ESL as noted by completion of an ESL trainers program
– ESL/EAL/TOEFL/TESOL certification is required

Essential Professional Background/Competencies

– Experience and understanding of the role and function of Parliamentary staff
– Interest and knowledge in International Relations, ASEAN and basic research and ICT skills
– Experience of working with adult learners
– Competency in teaching English as a second language, as demonstrated by a TOEFL certificate or a related combination of certification and experience
– Knowledge of basic research skills, including using ICT to search for information
– Translation skills and fluency in Myanmar as well as English language would be a big asset

Desirable Academic Qualifications

– Training experience in Asian countries is an asset

Desirable Professional Background/Competencies

– Ability to work in partnership is an asset
– Knowledge about the current Myanmar political situation and Government
– Overseas experience in a developing context
– Cultural competency and knowledge of the Asian region are assets.

Important information for candidates

Cuso International covers the following costs:

Fundraising: We ask each volunteer, regardless of placement length, to raise $2,000. All volunteers receive support from Cuso International to help achieve the goal through fundraising. If the volunteer chooses not to fundraise or is unable to achieve the fundraising goal, he/she can make a one-time donation or become a monthly donor to support our work.

E-volunteering: Depending on the nature of the placement volunteers are encouraged to provide e-volunteering support to the local partner or Cuso International before or after the field placement.
